| Whut I Is Doin' |
[Jan. 21st, 2008|06:44 pm] |
i'm in the city this week. i'm staying at the super-fab hotel qtin times square. i've stayed here before...and love it. simple, clean, comfortable bed, a pool in the lobby with a swim up bar. and free wi-fi and continental bkfst. what's not to love?!
over the weekend j+i had a movie extravaganza. one that left me all tense and busted up. we started out with 'cloverfield' on friday then went on to see 'one missed call' and 'i am legend' on saturday. note, 2 of those films dealt with nyc being obliterated. so i was a bit nervous coming down here today. which is stupid, since i'm down here like every 3 weeks, it seems. but i was.
oh yeah - i loved all the movies. all. of. them. i like this new treand of horror/thriller films that don't have warm-fuzzy endings. |

| ada + insound |
[Jan. 13th, 2008|02:30 pm] |
anyone else find it interesting that pitchfork didn't mention that ada (warner bros. "indie" distributor) bought insound?!
even more reason to hate pitchfork... guess they'll have no bias now. will they stop having the "buy it at insound links?!" i doubt it.
i don't carry records distributed by ada or any major. so there. |

here is a list i made for one of my distributors and i still stand by it. i wasn't bowled over by the new records from spoon, arcade fire, etc. but i do really like all the against me songs i've heard.
--- best of 2007
immaculate machine - fables [check out jarhand genaro - s/t [check out "suspicions"] emery - i'm only a man [every list has to have to some emo...this is probably my favorite album of the year] boy in static - violet the twilight sad - fourteen autumns and fifteen winters helios - ayres amiina - kurr apparat - walls [check out "head up"] fonoda - eventually [check out "silence means disease" -- it's so painfully sad, it'll invigorate you. there's so much intensity in it.] young galaxy - s/t ["swing your heartache" is beautiful] |

| the last week...briefly |
[Jan. 13th, 2008|01:08 pm] |
last sat - mon i was in ann arbor training new interns on a big archive project i'm heading up for work. they are all brilliant people who picked up on our content management system quite quickly. i stayed at the westin at the detroit airport. it was unbelievably quiet and comfortable. i'd recommend the hotel, but not eating in their restaurant. i had a kia as a rental car. that car has no power.
the long-time 'school kid records' is finally closing after many years. reasoning? cause no one buys cds. i bought 4 though, they were on sale. i finally got the new pet shop boys record, 'fundamental.' it's quite good. there are a few fluff songs on it, but overall it's solid. and i finally got 'takk' by sigur ros.
mon - wed were spent in chicago. at the westin near the airport, which needs a severed overhaul. but the restaurant there was better. tuesday night i hung out with dear allison from carrot top... amazing. we had dinner at rodan in wicker park, then went to the bar where tim kinsella is a bartender. (he wasn't there that night tho.)
wed - today in LA. i stayed at the w in westwood for 2 nights. it was amazing and the food delicious at the restaurant. and lucky for me, dolph lundgren sat at the table next to me. so odd. i've been staying with my pal katy for the last few days. she lives in echo park and can walk everywhere, and i love that. i even ate at a chain here (acapulco) that i found quite good. we are heading down to venice/abbot kinney later on today. nice.
that's all...now i'm watching a show about me "science of obesity". |

and then i head back to nyc for a few days to the nyigf, with the delusions of grandeur that i can make :nook last another year.
-- xmas was great. j and i went down to san antonio to visit the folks. was the first time j was in texas, but he kept saying he didn't feel like he saw much of texas. to which i replied, "um, texas is big, and there isn't much in san antonio save for sprawl. but you got to see the alamo!" my nephew loves him.
we were back here for new years. j fell asleep at precisely 11.51pm. i was watching new years rockin' eve and wanted to rip my face off when i saw what is now "dick clark." it was truly horrifying. i woke j up at 11.59.50 and he was in a daze and was all "haaaaaappy new ... zzzzzzzz." we went to bed shortly after. |

it's pretty slow here today. but people have come in and told me it's a "fucking madhouse" over at the overpriced gift store a mile away. i should have hired little elves to drop my cards all over that place.
in other news... us air says i don't have reservations on the flights i'm supposed to be on tomorrow.
in even other news... i am starving.
in the final news of today - sweeney todd was pretty 'beh' for me. it was visually stunning, but that's where it ends. |

more reasons to hate mass market retailers. they will forever dilute the world with their crap from third world countries...countries that are slowly destroying their own lands with obscene amounts of pollution. manufactured landscapes is a must see if you are interested in this type of thing. |

| flippin' the bird |
[Dec. 17th, 2007|10:45 am] |
so it snowed hella lot yesterday.
i got the store around 10am this morning and started shoveling. when i shovel, i also try to clear out one complete parking space in front of the store.
i had just started clearing the parking space when big plower truck comes through and honks his horn. i looked at him and flipped the bird. why? you might ask? well - he had a huge plow...and where was the snow going to go? he was either going to:
a/ block the driveway a few feet down b/ block 2 other spaces in the same bldg i'm in c/ throw all the snow back on my sidewalk
he actually stopped the truck and asked me why i gave him the bird. i told him "i'm a business owner trying to clear out this parking space and you are going to throw this snow back on the side walk." he said he was trying to help, which i'm sure he was... BUT, he didn't think about blocking any other spaces or the driveway up ahead. after he drove off i just wanted to cry.
i may have overreacted, but holy crap - i was out there a good 45 minutes and was sweating buckets. it was not what i needed at that point.
i think i was also bitter because j got up at 4.45 to shovel our sidewalk/driveway and he didn't get back inside until 6.30. no lie. as he was finishing things up, the sidewalk plower came by and threw sh*tloads of snow back in the driveway. so when the sidewalk plower got stuck at the end of our block, he just laughed at him. i would have done the same.
blasted snow! |

| accident |
[Dec. 13th, 2007|06:21 pm] |
i had my first accident today when i was "driving." although - i was sitting at a red light, when a woman came off the 104, couldn't break, well, she did break, but it was snowy, and she lightly slid into me. some dents on the driver's side door.

| where i've been. |
[Dec. 8th, 2007|11:55 am] |
| [ | music |
| | devendra banhart | ] | sun - wed: i was camping out in ann arbor. interviewing peeps for a big project for the dot com. things went well. vinology sucked butt, so please don't ever go there to eat. prickly pear was still good, with amazingly strong margaritas. eve was just amazing, even though i only had a salad. i wanted to go to the goth/industrial night at necto, but when i found out you can still smoke in clubs, it put the kibbosh on that. since i was traveling all week, i did not want my pants to smell like cigs.
wed - fri: i was in nyc. it took 2 hours to get to midtown from la guardia...thanks to holiday traffic. busted. but it was nice to be in the office. it wasn't nice to get sick from 2 drinks. count them...2. one, two... drunk + hungover like you wouldn't believe. i missed half of the off-site for work...but made it to the afternoon sessions. i also missed the huge holiday party. the first real one they've had since i've been with the company. and i've been there 5 years. oh well. i was in bed watching the top chef holiday special and was asleep by 10.30. the best part? hearing katy fall off the bed when she got in...plastered...at 2.35am.
some notes from the trip: +salt/oil scrubs from sabon do not travel well in luggage. while they packed everything extremely well... there was still an oily, goopy mess in my bag. ugh. +the TSA are blowhards with too much power. in the past 2 months i've gotten through security in major, and not so major airports with - a metal fork, mouth wash!!!, and hand lotion. i must be a terrorist testing the system. obviously it doesn't work. what's interesting is that the 2 airports where the TSA cares least... about anything really, is the Delta terminal at JFK and Detroit. i also find it interesting that cities across the country are lax on different things. for example, my folks told me that there wasn't a 3 oz. limit in SAT. so who knows. also - why is it that only in small airports do they actually check your checked luggage? like, they'll open it up, take everything out, put it back in. (they do it here in rochester.) but they don't do that in major cities, it goes through that machine, that no one is paying attention to. i'm really just waiting for another plane to blow up because of a bomb and for the u.s. to go "how the fuck did that happen?" it's so obvious how. +DELTA can suck the big one. last night at check-in there were no less than 15 agents behind the counters at JFK. 4 computers were on, i think, i don't know. there were 5 people clustered around a monitor near the first class counter. 3 people just sitting on the conveyer belt hanging out, talking to another agent (who was staring at the screen of the agent sitting next to her). and there were TWO people in line waiting to check bags, i was one of them. it was ridiculous. never fly delta into JFK...seriously. their terminal is a wreck. +double cheddar + jalapeno bagels from au bon pain are delicious.
thank you, and goodnight. |
